Context

In the ”humoral immunity” group at the Institute for Biomedical Aging Research (IBA), we are investigating changes in biological processes leading to the reshaping of B cell physiology (the cells producing antibodies) with age. Aging is one of the major challenges societies are facing, not only due to its economic costs but also for the impacts on the social fabric. The necessity to ameliorate immune responses in the elderly has in particular been underscored recently by the high mortality rate among old COVID-19 patients.

Project / offer

For your doctoral work, you will be studying the role of miRNAs in the aging-dependent remodeling of B cell development in the mouse. miRNAs are small non-coding RNAs regulating gene expression. The investigations will be carried out employing state-of-the-art tools, including conditional gene targeting, multi-color flow cytometry and cell sorting, present at the IBA, a major aging research center in Austria. Progress will be discussed regularly at internal meetings as well as publicized at conferences and in publications.

The 3-year position is fully funded with a salary before taxes of EUR 2.460 / month (following the Austrian Science Fund guidelines). You will be part of the of our university, fostering interactions with other groups in the multidisciplinary landscape of aging research in Innsbruck, at the heart of the Alps. A start date in November 2023 is possible.

You should hold a Master degree in biology (e.g., molecular biology, cell biology, developmental biology) or equivalent fields in the life sciences. A fundamental knowledge of cell biology, the mouse model and / or immunology is expected.Hands-on experience with methods in molecular or cell biology, immunology or animal care is welcome, but not a must.

You are dynamic, flexible, like to take initiative and enjoy teamwork. Proficiency in English (oral and written) is a must.
